Australia pass legislation to have an R18+ rating for video games

R18+ is a rating your most likely to associate with a dodgy man, trench coat clad, slowly easing his way into a seedy Soho shop. Today, the Australian government wants everyone to associate this with video games as well. For years now, Australia gamers have had to suffer the likes of: Mortal Kombat, Bully and GTA being banned, with this new legislation hopefully putting a stop to all this.

This should be a sigh of relief for gamers from the land down under, with an R18+ in enforcement, games will very rarely be banned. The bill for this has been in circulation since 2009, but gamers can expect widespread use of the new rating system from the beginning of 2013. Complementary legislation will be passed by individual territories to assure that the games are regulated correctly.

Jason Clare, Minister for Home Affairs said:

These are important reforms over 10 years in the making.
