Dead Space: The Story So Far
300 years ago, the year 2214, a mysterious alien artefact was discovered in the Gulf of Mexico known as ‘The Marker’. Scientific research attempted to uncover the mysteries behind the Marker and its power. It proved once and for all that alien life exists in our universe. Michael Altman, the lead researcher and discoverer revealed the presence of the Marker and its alien origin and spoke of the unity it promised for all mankind. In 2215, Altman died mysteriously in what many believe was an assassination, in an attempt to cover up the Markers secrets. After his death, Altman became a martyr and from this, ‘Unitology’ was born. Unitology now thrives as hugely powerful religion with members ranging from heads of state to powerful political figures. However still, this religious organisation remains incredibly secret and increasingly radical.
The Marker not only holds incredible power but the ability to transform the human body after death into twisted monsters known as ‘Necromorphs’. It also has a huge impact on human psyche causing hallucinations, dementia and even insanity. Despite this, Unitologist’s regard the Marker as a divine relic capable of life after death and the unification of mind, body and soul known as ‘Convergence’.
Years later, in humanities desperation to cling to unlimited resources and ultimate power, man made Markers were successfully created. However, with the chaos and danger that ensued the markers were deemed too dangerous and buried across the known universe.
2508. The USG Ishimura, a ‘planetcracker’ starship sends out a distress signal to the CEC (Concordance Extraction Corporation) after a mining operation on the planet Aegis 7 goes wrong. USG Kellion is sent to investigate. On board, commander Zach Hammond, Kendra Daniels and the main protagonist, Isaac Clarke. Isaac is an engineer and volunteer on the mission in search of his girlfriend Nicole, who works on the Ishimura and who has also sent distress messages to Isaac. Upon arrival, the Kellion crashes and Zach, Kendra and Isaac all attempt to restore control over the Ishimura where upon they discover an infection of Necromorphs plaguing the ship.
Isaac Clarke discovers that the conditions on the Ishimura were caused by the unearthing of a forgotten Marker on the planet Aegis 7 and that the Ishimura’s presence was an unauthorized illegal mining operation. It is then revealed that Kendra Daniels is an Earth Gov. operative sent to bring back the Marker to study its effects. She steals the Marker while Isaac is attempting to return the relic back to Aegis 7. With the help of his girlfriend Nicole, Isaac successfully retrieves the Marker back from Kendra and returns the Marker back Aegis 7 while also defeating the alien ‘Hive Mind’ that is controlling the Necromorphs. It is finally revealed that Nicole was never helping Isaac but was in fact an apparition of Isaac’s dementia caused by the Marker. Nicole had died before the Kellion had even arrived at the Ishimura. Dead Space ends with a cut to black after Isaac is attacked by a vision of a transformed Nicole.

3 years later, Isaac awakes in an asylum in the Sprawl, a city on one of Saturn’s moons, Titan. With the effects of the Marker still causing havoc in Isaac’s mind, a scientific team run by Dr Hans Tiedemann is attempting to re-create the Marker using images and memories from Isaacs own psyche and that of another patient, Nolan Stross. Isaac escapes confinement in his straight jacket to discover a Necromorph outbreak in the sprawl. He is continually contacted by Stross who is clearly insane from the Markers effects, he rambles to Isaac about how they must destroy the Marker.
Isaac then meets Ellie Langford, a CEC pilot who joins their mission. She then contacts Isaac informing him that she has made contact Stross, who is increasingly becoming more unstable with dementia. Later, when Isaac attempts to regroup with Ellie and Stross, Stross attacks Ellie with a screwdriver and Isaac is then forced to kill Stross in self defense.
It is in the final stages of the game when Isaac sets off to destroy the Marker. He sends a protesting Ellie off in a gunship before going off to complete his mission. Still being plagued by visions of Nicole, Isaac finds the Marker and kills Tiedemann. The Marker then triggers Convergence and the vision of Nicole explains that the only way the make the Marker ‘whole’ is for the person who created it to be absorbed in with this Convergence. In this case, Isaac is the creator.
Defiant, Isaac resists in a mental battle within the Marker, facing the demons of Nicole, the Marker itself and the Necromorphs. Upon waking, Isaac discovers the Marker is now inoperable and his task is complete, however, it seems too late as the Sprawl is in the middle of a nuclear meltdown. Just when Isaac concedes his fate, Ellie comes back in the gunship to rescue Isaac.
Post credits, a character known as ‘The Overseer’ can be heard talking to his subordinate. He explains that the Titan Marker site 12 has been destroyed. The Overseer responds “The other sites will have to pick up the pieces”
