Diablo 3′s Dueling Conundrum Solved?

Everyone who has played Diablo 2 knows that PVP was the major part in end-game content for the game. Hopefuls, including myself, have been patiently awaiting any sign of a dueling mechanic to surface with Blizzards Diablo 3. Well now all former and present Diablo 3 players can rejoice…

Blizzard announced recently that dueling would be making it into the next patch (1.0.7). It will support a new in-game zone where up to 4 players can free-for-all battle until their hearts content. Dying in this arena will allow for respawn, even for ‘Hardcore’ characters. Players will also take no durability damage. Unfortunately for those competitive, there will be no scoring mechanic during the dueling.

This leads to the question, “Will I be rewarded in any way for dueling?” The answer is no. Blizzard has no plans right now to include any form of reward for playing. It’s simple a system to test your skills with your favorite class, show off your loot and blow off some steam.

The original idea was to include a team based arena where you would battle it out to reach the required kills before the other team (aka Team Deathmatch). Blizzard heavily tested this but in the end most of the testers didn’t feel that it was something to enjoy beyond a few hours at most.

Some other minor things included in the patch will be: experience bonuses for Monster Power (a difficulty level gauge), a new gem tier, and rare crafting recipes. I really like the idea of pumping up experience gain even more for monster kills. At a level 5 (of possible 10), you will be gaining a 165% bonus to XP, up from the previous 60%. You will be able to join public games with Monster Power levels enabled now, allowing you to grind it out with friends for sweet loot.

The patch is still in the testing phase, but my guess would be that it will be available in the next few weeks. Currently you can try out the latest patch on the public test servers if you really can’t wait. I am personally looking forward to testing out my sub-par skills against some people online. Official patch notes can be found here.
