GTA V Not At E3
Take-Two wants to focus on smaller spring and summer events this year
During an interesting earnings call discussing Take-Two Interactive Software’s Q4 2013 results, president Karl Slatoff mentioned a few priorities set in motion for Take-Two, and E3 isn’t among them.
This year, our label will not have a booth on the floor
Which inherently means – no Rockstar or 2K, and thus ‘no sneak-a-peeks’ for GTA V or other upcoming titles; like the “sequel” to 2012′s XCOM: Enemy Unknown – ‘The Bureau: XCOM Declassified’, among others.
Both Rockstar Games and 2K have instead decided to focus their marketing and PR efforts on a series of events throughout the spring and summer
Take-Two’s decision to skip E3 could be a matter of timing and portfolio; mostly a handful of upcoming mobile titles, and some DLC for Borderlands 2 and Bioshock: Infinite are lined up in the immediate queue, but that’s about it.
Yes, there’s NBA 2K14, WWE 2K14 and of course GTA V – which really can’t get any bigger at this point – but economically it may be seen as a waste of time and money – building huge showcases with tons of overhead just to produce some ‘shock and awe’ for 72 hours at a highly coveted annual event – not to mention expensive.
Further into the conference call, Slatoff mentioned that currently Take-Two has established a position of “consistent profitability”, and right now they’re focusing on a “pipeline” of unannounced core titles for current, and next-gen consoles – including mobile devices.
E3 kicks of on June 11th, and should still make for a good time even without Take-Two’s upcoming bread-winners. There are plenty of other publishers that can’t wait to showcase their next-gen masterpieces, so stick around for those.
It will definitely hurt not to see GTA V at E3, but it won’t kill me – some would beg to differ, I’m sure.
