The DmC Redesign: Interesting New Direction or Total Flop?

Since the new Devil May Cry project from Ninja Theory was announced, there’s been a, how should I put this?.. Strongly worded debate, on the direction they’ve decided to take Dante in. Many fans were outraged that the Dante they grew up with was getting this gritty redesign and being made into a younger punk rock looking demon slayer who seems to be missing the characteristics that made Dante cool to begin with. Others sat back waiting for gameplay and a little more information before deciding if they should go along with the new game.

Much different from what we’re used to

With the presentations at E3 it seems sides have been taken, the fans that hate the redesign are still hating, but the gameplay has won over a whole lot of people. Classic Devil May Cry combat mixed with a bevy of weapons that can be switched out mid combo for chained attacks make the game look crazy fun to play. Also, it seems as if Devil Trigger is returning; only instead of going full demon the world around Dante goes grey while his coat turns red and his hair goes white. It’s cool to see the traditional Dante look hasn’t been completely lost but for some fans this isn’t nearly enough.

Little closer…

Personally I didn’t know what to make of the redesign because I couldn’t figure out if this game was a prequel or its own story all together. Different publications reported it as a reboot while others said it is going to be a prequel to the entire series. After enough digging I found that the game takes place in a parallel universe to the original series, and somehow afterwards the design differences sat much better with me. I feel like this new Dante is definitely going to be a change of pace but I’m willing to give it a shot after seeing the excellent gameplay and striking visuals we’ve been fed so far.

So I have to ask, how does the community feel about the new Dante now that we have more information on the game? Is this going to kill the DmC franchise or breathe some new life into it? If you don’t like the new look and attitude would you be willing to pick up the game in spite of the redesign? I know when January 15th rolls around I’m going to give it a shot and hope for the best.

About the Author

+ I've never been good at talking about myself. I like to think of myself as a professional appreciator of games. My love of video games goes so deep that I wrote my senior thesis on Bioshock as a digital re-imagining of Atlas Shrugged, needless to say I will never play that game again.

I feel its going to be a good game as a new IP, but it will suck as a Devil May Cry. It seems a lot more like a faster version of Heavenly Sword than a Devil May Cry, I really dislike Dante, his look, his teenage bratty personality, he curses so much, he looks gay at points, he curses too much, he smokes and he seems to much of a careless person. I understand the real Dante would probably do some of this stuff but its not shown or thrown in your face, he was just cool, this new guy is trying to hard. Also going back to gameplay, theres no red orbs which many articles have said im not sure if it will have in the end, the aerial combat makes things look simple, the guns looks crappy to use in the air with auto hitting, and they dont look as fun to use or as flashy, and there is no targeting lock on to enemies system. The game doesnt look to bad but the new character seems so horrible to try and endure throughout the game.

I get ya, a lot of what you said could be a deviation from the norm that a lot of fans wouldn’t want to see. The personality I’m trying not to pass judgment on yet because you never know, there could be some character development, we really don’t know yet. We’re not even really sure he knows he’s the son of Sparta, they could go the route of having him learn about his roots and manning up. As far as gameplay is concerned i didn’t know about there being no targeting, that could be a pain.
