Zombie Bait Edition Goes On Sale Anyway
Deep Silver has decided to release the Dead Island Riptide Zombie Bait Edition despite issuing an apology over the product.
Announced in January, the Special Edition was met with criticism for its inclusion of a 31cm resin statue of a limbless female torso. Priced at £89.99, the statue features blood and decomposing flesh everywhere except…you’ve guessed it, the breasts, which are prominently displayed in a Union Jack bikini. Obviously not expecting the fan disapproval the piece went on to receive; publisher Deep Silver enthusiastically explained their decision to include the unusual extra:
“We wanted to provide a unique collector’s edition that was utterly ‘Dead Island’ and would make a striking conversation piece on any discerning zombie gamer’s mantel.” said Paul Nicholls, Deep Silver’s sales and marketing director.
However shortly after receiving criticism from fans for its gruesome and over sexualised figure the publisher did a swift U-turn on its stance on the extra and issued a statement apologising to fans and promising that an incident like this will not be repeated:
“For the limited run of the Zombie Bait Edition for Europe and Australia, a decision was made to include a gruesome statue of a zombie torso, which was cut up like many of our fans had done to the undead enemies in the original Dead Island,” the publisher explained. “We want to reiterate to the community, fans and industry how deeply sorry we are, and that we are committed to making sure this will never happen again”.
Despite the Deep Silver’s eagerness to convey its regret over the statue, it doesn’t appear that fan criticism was enough to make them want to lose money on a redesign as the Dead Island Riptide Zombie Bait Edition will be making its way, unaltered, to UK and Australian shores.
Dead Island Riptide will be available in the UK this Friday, 26th April.
